The project

Hospitality and tourism remain the primary drivers of the economy in the Balearic Islands, generating almost 40% of regional GDP and 1 in 4 jobs in the country overall. However, access to specialised training remains unequal across the island. In the north of Mallorca, where tourism is highly concentrated, there are no specific training facilities for cookery, catering or hotel management.

In this first phase, the Balearic Government is working on technical designs to provide Alcudia with a vocational school in the field of tourism. This initial stage includes drafting the basic design and project execution, which are required to tender its future construction. The medium-term goal is to offer official training, courses for unemployed people and further training for active workers.

The lack of training infrastructure on the island, especially in high-demand sectors such as catering, is a barrier to professionalisation and better working conditions. Moreover, private investment in such facilities is low due to their high costs. This results in the need for government intervention in local industry.

The action is partially funded through sustainable tourism tax, which has contributed €237,000. Although work has not yet begun, this first step represents a move towards a fairer training model that better responds to the real needs of the Balearic job market.
