Tourism remains an essential economic pillar in the Balearic Islands, but it needs qualified staff who want to work in the sector. A new strategic plan seeks to rethink vocational training in tourism and promote campaigns to help dignify a career in the sector and attract young talent.

The project
The Balearic Islands aim to become an international benchmark in sustainable tourism, and that means rethinking not only the offer, but also those who make it possible. The new strategic plan led by the Balearic Islands Agency for Tourism Strategy (AETIB) sets out a clear roadmap for improving training and professional recognition in the sector.
The proposal stems from the conclusion shared by administrations, employers and trade unions: a lack of qualified profiles, a lack of appeal of the sector for young people and a disconnection between existing training programmes and the real needs of the tourism market. The objective is twofold: to raise professional standards and to improve the social perception of tourism as a career opportunity.
The project includes drawing up a training map and an operational action plan, as well as communication campaigns aimed at students, workers and society in general. It will seek to enhance the value of the sector from within, highlighting its diversity, its possibilities for professional development and its contribution to a more cohesive economy.
This process, which will be ongoing from 2024 to 2027, is designed as a cross-cutting and participatory strategy. It will include discussion tables and a monitoring system with specific indicators to measure results. Public funding is seen here as a driving force to strengthen the link between sustainability and quality employment.
