A government scheme to foster innovation among key companies and sectors

What does it consist of?

In order to boost business through innovation, the Balearic Government launched a scheme in 2018 aimed at strengthening knowledge clusters. The goal: to improve the transfer of R&D&I between industries such as tourism, biotechnology and digital, connecting knowledge with the real economy.

The project

One of the main challenges facing the research and innovation system in the Balearic Islands is its lack of connection with the production sector. This gap between science and business limits the full use of knowledge generated, thus slowing progress towards a more diversified, more resilient economic model. In response, the Balearic Government launched a line of public aid aimed at innovative business clusters.

The scheme selected proposals from established entities in strategic sectors such as information technology, biotechnology, smart tourism and the chemical industry, represented by clusters such as TURISTEC, BIOBIM, CLIQIB and BALEARS.T.

The measure, funded by sustainable tourism tax, provided institutional backing for these collaborative platforms that promote technology transfer, networking and smart specialisation. The selected entities committed to implementing their action plans over three years, with yearly evaluations and ongoing technical monitoring.

The result has been greater visibility for these intermediate structures, which now have more resources to develop joint projects, facilitate innovation among SMEs and act as a bridge between research and the market.
