The project

The Balearic Islands Institute for Health Research (IdISBa) remains a driving force for scientific knowledge in the field of health. The FUTURMed programme, implemented between 2017 and 2023, has boosted the recruitment of research professionals with two sister schemes: Radix and Folium. Both have been designed to attract professionals with leadership skills and strengthen science in the region.

Radix has focused on attracting emerging principal investigators with international backgrounds, capable of opening up new lines of research in priority areas for the Balearic Islands’ health system. Meanwhile, Folium has recruited PhD graduates to work on current research, with the aim of supporting ongoing projects and strengthening their medium-term projection.

Beyond recruitment, the programme has served to regain momentum lost during years of science budget cuts. FUTURMed has also reinforced cross-cutting training in key skills such as leadership, entrepreneurship and communication, required to effectively share knowledge with the rest of society.

The budget execution rate was over 94%, reflecting the high level of project compliance. IdISBa, awarded the HR Excellence in Research seal by the European Commission, thus upholds its commitment to an open, transparent and merit-based recruitment model, which is key to retaining research talent on the islands.
