Calle Major is the main historical artery of the urban core of Es Migjorn Gran. This street crosses the municipality from north to south and the entire road network of the old town depends on it.
At present, it has many deficiencies, including a high number of leaks in the water supply network and problems with the sewer network becoming blocked. In addition, the low-voltage electricity supply network and the telephone network are not underground and the road does not have a rainwater drainage system, among others issues.
The construction project to improve the facilities of the southern section of Calle Major of Es Migjorn Gran includes plans to carry out a series of tasks which will include pedestrianising this section of the street and correcting the slopes of the street to improve drainage and the section of street between Sa Plaza and Cap de la Vila, paying special attention to solving the existing problems.
It is a vital project that is of great public interest and will prove to very beneficial for all citizens. Pedestrianising the southern stretch of Calle Major will expand the network of pedestrian streets of this municipality and, therefore, expand the number of streets free of cars and architectural barriers.
Also, the modifications mean that the town will have a new public space for social interaction which will lead to commercial activities, people taking strolls and other outdoor activities such as street markets or art exhibitions that are typical of this municipality. It would also be used to encourage other activities that energise the town and be a new tourist attraction that will tempt visitors all year round.
