The project

In 1997, a treatment system based on soft processing was built in Portinatx, including anaerobic lagoons, natural ventilation and a submarine outfall for discharge. Although it initially supported irrigation and groundwater recharge, population growth and regulatory changes have led this plant to fall outside current standards.

The existing system is incapable of removing pollutants at the levels required by legislation, which prevents any farming or environmental use of the treated water. In addition, the facilities have deteriorated, causing bad smells that affect residents and visitors alike, in a setting that attracts a lot of tourists.

In order to tackle this situation, Sant Joan de Labritja Town Council has backed the construction of a new treatment plant to ensure effective treatment prior to discharge. The facility will adopt processes that meet European requirements, thereby protecting marine and terrestrial ecosystems, and improving the quality of beach water.

The project, with a total budget of more than €4.2 million—half of which has come from sustainable tourism tax, is part of a wider environmental improvement strategy. Its completion will represent not only a technical breakthrough, but also an important step towards a more sustainable model of tourism and greater wellbeing for the local population.
