Reforestation and conservation actions to improve the landscape and river ecosystems

What does it consist of?

The restoration of elm groves and other riverside forests in Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza seeks greater protection for aquatic ecosystems and island biodiversity. The plan has seen the planting of Dutch elm disease-resistant trees, the improvement of habitats in the Natura 2000 network, and the monitoring of their progress.

The project

As well as their ecological importance, riparian woodlands play a key role in regulating the islands’ water cycle. In the drainage basins of the Balearic Islands, these plant communities help to slow down erosion, protect the soil, filter pollutants and support groundwater recharge. Their recovery therefore has a direct impact on water quality and soil stability.

The plan comprises four major lines of action: the cultivation of native plants at the Menut forest nursery, the installation of enclosures and safeguards in areas of special environmental interest, the planting of elm trees resistant to Dutch elm disease together with other riverside hardwoods, and the technical monitoring of their progress. These actions have particularly targeted areas within the Natura 2000 Network.

Improvement to the landscape as a result of these actions is also a key aspect of the plan. River sections and wetlands have gained vegetation cover, ecological connectivity is greater, and more attractive environments have been created for responsible public use. These actions also help to diversify nature tourism on the islands.

With an investment of €95,000, the plan has deployed staff specialising in forestry work, especially in rural areas. Promoting reforestation during the off-peak months of farming activity has enhanced training and employment in a sector that has both environmental and social objectives.
