The Balearic Islands is promoting the use of biomass for energy through sustainable forest management

What does it consist of?

With almost half of its territory covered by woodland, the Balearic Islands is launching a plan to harness biomass as a source of renewable energy, promote rural employment and improve water management. The project will be deployed over three years with an investment of €3.69 million.

The project

45% of the surface of the Balearic Islands is taken up by forests of mostly pine and holly oak trees. This resource, however, has historically been underused. Accumulated biomass increases the risk of forest fires and fails to take advantage of a key opportunity to move towards a cleaner and decentralised energy model.

The project proposes a three-fold strategy: harnessing biomass as a renewable source, reducing the vulnerability of the forest landscape and boosting jobs in rural areas. This includes creating logistics centres, purchasing machinery, training expert staff and installing biomass boilers in public buildings and local businesses.

The planned harvesting of timber and plant debris will not just serve to generate energy. It also aims to reduce pressure on forests, encourage natural regeneration and improve the soil's capacity to retain water, especially in areas vulnerable to erosion or torrential runoff.

The project has a budget of €3.69 million for the 2025–2027 period. Beyond the environmental impact, the initiative is expected to help boost the rural economy. Some municipalities, such as Bunyola, Esporles and Santa Eulària, have already taken steps in this direction, opting for biomass as a local alternative to fossil fuels.
