Conservation plan to protect endangered species and improve habitats on the islands
What does it consist of?
The execution of the Recovery and Conservation Plan for seabirds has made it possible to boost protection for the Balearic shearwater and other vulnerable species in Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera. Actions under the plan have improved the quality of their colonies, reduced human threats and provided for stable monitoring of their populations.

The project
The Balearic shearwater (Puffinus mauretanicus) is one of the most unique jewels of nature in the Balearic archipelago. Endemic and endangered, this seabird shares its habitat with other vulnerable species such as Scopoli’s shearwater, Audouin’s gull and the European shag. Most of their colonies are located in Natura 2000 Network areas, sites of great environmental importance. However, they exist on a coastline often visited by residents and tourists alike.
The strategy has involved direct intervention at breeding sites, including biological restoration work to eliminate invasive species that put breeding at risk. Measures have also been taken to reduce mortality caused by human activity, including bycatch, spills and poorly sited infrastructure.
The plan has also provided for preventive measures, aimed at minimising the clash between birds and human activities on the coast. This work has been supported by an ongoing monitoring programme, which is essential to assess the progress of the populations and to fine-tune conservation measures in the long term.
The initiative, with an investment of €303,000, has boosted protection for species that are central to the natural identity of the islands. In addition to their ecological significance, the presence of these birds offers the potential to diversify tourism and include birdwatching activities, thus fostering job opportunities and economic activity outside peak season.
