The project aims to tackle flooding, leaks and accessibility issues in the town centre

What does it consist of?

Maria de la Salut is carrying out works to modernise its rainwater collection network and replace a decades-old drinking water pipe. The work is focused between Plaça des Pou and the Santa Margalida road, where heavy rainfall leads to flooding and leaks make supply losses significantly higher.

The project

Water management is once again a focus of local investment in Mallorca. In Maria de la Salut, the overburdened rainwater network and old drinking water pipes have caused persistent problems in the lower part of the town for years, especially during heavy rainfall. The combination of flooding, leaks and urban shortcomings have led to the need for comprehensive action on several streets in the municipality.

The project will see the construction of a new underground rainwater collection network to support the existing one and to better absorb the flow during storms. The aim is to prevent water from building up on the surface and ultimately entering homes and shops. This improvement comes at a time of increasingly concentrated, intense rainfall, which tends to affect municipalities in the inner part of the island.

The project will also replace the main drinking water pipe, which is currently made of fibre cement and has been in service for more than 38 years. According to the project report, current losses amount to 35% of the water transported, which is especially high in the section under most pressure. The renewal of this pipeline and the servicing of secondary branches will reduce the level of leakage to below 10%.

Beyond the water problem, the project also includes a major improvement to the town centre: pavements will be made wider to comply with accessibility laws and make them safer for pedestrians. Currently, some parts are so narrow that people have to walk on the road. The whole renovation project therefore not only seeks more efficient water management, but also more walkable, safer streets for residents.
