What does it consist of?

The Island Council of Ibiza will use old pavilion 202 in Sa Coma park as the operational base for the new Island Maritime Service. The aim of this action is to improve coastal surveillance and combat the growing pressure on the marine environment caused by intensive tourist use and environmental impacts.

The project

For years, the coast and waters of Ibiza have been facing a growing imbalance between the intensity of human activities and the resources available to control them. Tourist pressure, increased maritime traffic and illegal practices such as anchoring on Posidonia (seagrass) or unauthorised parties at sea have made it clear that there is a need to strengthen surveillance resources.

With this objective in mind, the Island Council will carry out a complete renovation of building 202 of the old Sa Coma barracks, in an area encompassing 1,430 m² which will soon be home to the Maritime Service. The project includes the redistribution of the barracks’ interior to create 12 accommodation units, common areas and administrative offices. The façade is to be reused, while the roof will be completely replaced.

The new base will extend the scope of action of personnel in charge of fisheries surveillance, anchorage control, environmental inspection and coordination with maritime emergencies. This is a key building for the effective application of the regulations for the protection of Posidonia and the areas included in the Natura 2000 Network, such as the Ses Salines Natural Park.

In addition to facilitating compliance with current legislation, the action reinforces the institutional commitment to the preservation of the coastline, considered one of the most fragile natural tourist assets of the Pityusic Islands. Work could begin in early 2025, once the building permit has been granted and the corresponding tender has been processed.
