Sant Miquel set to have a more efficient and secure water system for residents and tourists

What does it consist of?

The town of Sant Miquel, in the north of Ibiza, will have a new 2,000 m³ tank to regulate the supply of desalinated water. The infrastructure will improve the quality of the service and guarantee supply to the tourist port, which until now depended on private networks and vulnerable catchments during the summer season.

The project

Pressure on water resources is a structural challenge in a large part of the Balearic Islands. In tourist areas such as the port of Sant Miquel, the demand for water during the summer far exceeds the current supply capacities. To address this situation, the construction of a regulation tank with a capacity of 2,000 m³, connected to the desalinated water network, has been approved.

The initiative comes in response to an urgent technical and health need: the current system of direct supply from the interconnection network lacks guarantees in terms of constant pressure and water disinfection stability. The new tank, located 200 metres above sea level, will make it possible to regulate the flow, stabilise pressure and improve the quality of service by means of a remote control system.

The installation will not only supply the urban centre of Sant Miquel but also the tourist port, where hotels can accommodate over 1,400 people. In high season, daily demand is estimated at over 1,700 m³. The tank will guarantee supply for at least 24 hours even in the event of a breakdown and will allow other areas to be progressively included in the public system.

This type of infrastructure, which is increasingly common in island environments, is essential for the efficient management of desalinated water. Storage and gravity-fed distribution reduce energy consumption and improve system reliability. In this case, the support from the Sustainable Tourism Tax (ITS) fund makes it possible to adapt basic services to the reality of a region conditioned by seasonal tourism and episodes of drought.
