Eight Mallorcan municipalities are collaborating to improve country roads with support from the Sustainable Tourism Tax (ITS) fund
What does it consist of?
Eight town councils in the Serra de Tramuntana region have agreed to take joint action to restore more than 110 kilometres of public country roads. This cross-municipal action aims to reinforce accessibility, protect cultural heritage and respond to increased pressure from tourism on traditional routes.

The project
The Serra de Tramuntana Association is launching a joint plan to carry out works on more than 110,000 metres of country roads in eight municipalities: Andratx, Calvià, Deià, Escorca, Esporles, Estellencs, Fornalutx and Pollença. This work expands on the first action plan carried out in previous years, and seeks to create a network of safe and well-preserved paths in one of the busiest areas on the island.
Each municipality has identified the most damaged stretches in order to devise measures for forest clean-ups, removing debris, signage, repairing dry stone walls and improving outdoor furniture. This work aims not only to improve roads for hikers and emergency services, but also to preserve the landscape and cultural identity of the Tramuntana mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Pressure from tourism has led to more wear and tear on lots of these roads, many of which are historic routes between towns. This initiative seeks to reinforce hiking as a low season attraction, boost small local businesses dedicated to the rural environment, and raise awareness of the responsible use of these spaces.
In addition to technical implementation, the Association will create a joint impact assessment and publish the results, laying the foundations for a more stable model of country road maintenance. The initiative emerges as a long-term response to years of under-investment and a growing demand for access to the natural environment.
