Renovation of Networks and Paving in the Tourist District of Es Pujols

A plan to improve water management and upgrade the pedestrian area in the tourist district

What does it consist of?

Works in Es Pujols have made it possible to replace outdated sewage and drinking water networks, improve rainwater management, and renovate the pedestrian area with new paving, energy-efficient lighting and underground power lines. The project

Es Pujols, Formentera’s major tourist district, featured a fibre-cement sewage system that was more than three decades old. Leaks, clogging and seepage were frequent, and a large amount of rainwater ended up unnecessarily in the sewage treatment plant. The drinking water network, with some sections still made PVC, also had issues that affected water pressure and service performance.

The works have replaced both networks with modern systems in line with current standards, incorporating a separate pipeline for rainwater. This measure improves the performance of the treatment plant and ensures better use of water resources, in line with the use of the island’s irrigation reservoir.

Beyond the basic infrastructure, the works have focused on improving the urban environment. Overhead electricity and telephone lines have been buried, streetlights have been replaced with low-energy LED technology and a network of fire hydrants has been installed. These measures, in addition to optimising safety and energy efficiency, have reduced the visual impact on the public space.

Finally, the pedestrian area has been repaved, new street furniture has been installed and trees have been planted. These actions have revamped the image of Es Pujols and improved the experience for both residents and visitors, in keeping with the coastal environment and its role as a major tourist and social space.
