Municipality of Calvià set to expand its recycled water system for sustainable irrigation, with new connections and digital control

What does it consist of?

Calvià has launched an ambitious project to extend the use of recycled water in public and private green areas. The action, with a budget of over 4.2 million euros, aims to reduce drinking water consumption, adapt to climate change and prevent discharges of treated water into the sea.

The project

The municipality of Calvià has shown commitment to more efficient water management for years. The reuse of treated water is one of the key tools to reduce the pressure on aquifers and the consumption of drinking water for non-priority uses such as garden irrigation, maintenance of sports facilities or certain urban uses.

Along these lines, a new recycled water system has been designed with the aim of extending its availability to areas with high demand. The plan covers areas such as Santa Ponça, Magaluf, Peguera, Puerto Portals, Cala Vinyes and Sol de Mallorca, some of which were not yet connected to the general network. The project also includes regulation and remote control systems integrated in the Calvià 2000 digital management system.

According to the preliminary agronomic study, the potentially irrigable area exceeds 900,000 square metres, which will mean an annual demand of over 1.3 million cubic metres of recycled water can be met. This action not only addresses sustainability criteria, but is also consistent with climate change mitigation strategies and the transition to a circular economy.

The system is based on existing infrastructure such as the Santa Ponça regeneration plant, the Bendinat plant and the recent network extensions carried out between 2016 and 2021. With this new phase, Calvià takes a further step towards integrated water management by reducing discharges into the sea, improving environmental quality and ensuring a more rational use of available resources.
