What does it consist of?

The project aims to reclaim old railway lines, create new pedestrian routes and improve intermodality between cycling and public transport in the Balearic Islands. The planned actions will target both Mallorca and Ibiza, seeking more sustainable and safer journeys that are more connected with the landscape.

The project

Non-motorised mobility is gaining prominence in the territorial planning of the Balearic Islands. This project consists of several actions aimed at promoting walking and cycling, not only as an alternative to private cars, but also as a way of reclaiming disused infrastructure and improving connections with public transport.

One of the most important actions is the greenway between S'Arenal and Llucmajor in Mallorca, which reclaims an old railway track stretching nearly nine kilometres; an important heritage and landscape feature. Also in Mallorca, the three-kilometre route between Consell–Alaró station and the town of Alaró will be adapted to provide a safe connection for pedestrians and cyclists.

The project also includes action in Ibiza: the non-motorised connection between Sant Jordi and Platja d'en Bossa. The proposal includes a new footbridge to cross the motorway and a special path to the coastal area, improving accessibility in a highly popular area. Moreover, the local council will turn an expropriated house into a cultural centre.

The initiative is complemented by measures to improve intermodality by installing secure bicycle storage areas at various public transport stations. The aim is to make combined journeys smoother and the daily use of bicycles for local journeys more practical. Overall, the project envisages a network that is more connected, safer and more in line with the archipelago’s sustainable mobility objectives.
