The project

The promotion of energy communities in urban settings has become a key tool for moving towards a fairer and more sustainable energy model. In contrast to the dependence on fossil fuels, this type of project combines technological innovation, emission reduction and social cohesion.

The project presented by the Balearic Institute of Energy aims to install photovoltaic systems on the roofs of public buildings and other urban surfaces. It is expected to have a capacity of 2 MW and an estimated annual production of 3,000 MWh, equivalent to the average use of over 1,000 households. Access will be shared and will prioritise nearby residents, with an estimated annual saving of up to 300 euros on electricity bills per user.

In addition to the design and implementation of the installations, the programme includes a participatory process open to the public, a public call for tenders for the distribution of energy, and digital tools for monitoring and billing. All of this will take place over an estimated 12 months, with a budget of 4.5 million euros.

The focus of the project is on both energy and social aspects. It not only seeks to mitigate climate change through the implementation of clean energy, but also to generate a tangible economic return in local communities. In some cases, profits will also be used to refurbish public housing complexes or to promote cooperative agricultural initiatives on the land where the installations are located.
