Government to earmark 8 million euros for municipal projects to reduce the impact of heat in the Balearic Islands

What does it consist of?

Given the increase in extreme temperatures on the islands, the Balearic Government has set up a new grant scheme aimed at helping municipalities design and implement public spaces that serve as climate shelters. The aim is to provide thermal comfort in particularly vulnerable urban environments.

The project

Climate change is manifesting itself with increasing force in urban environments such as those of the Balearic Islands, where the heat island phenomenon aggravates the effects of heat waves. Forecasts point to a scenario with more extreme events, higher energy consumption and direct risks to public health.

In this context, the Department for Circular Economy, Energy Transition and Climate Change has earmarked 8 million euros to co-fund climate shelter projects between 2025 and 2026. These spaces, designed with vegetation, shade, water and rest areas, aim to reduce the local temperature and provide comfort during episodes of intense heat.

The grants will be aimed at local organisations through competitive calls for proposals. Eligible projects include both the technical drafting and the execution of the actions: from works and installations to street furniture and signage. At least 30 initiatives are expected to be selected based on environmental quality, social utility and coherence with climate goals.

In addition to thermal comfort, the shelters will have cultural and educational uses, also promoting community resilience. The Government plans to assess the results by means of indicators such as temperature reduction, water saving, extent of the areas where action has been taken and citizen perception. The last call for proposals will run until November 2028.
