What does it consist of?

The construction of a new drinking water pipeline between Maria de la Salut and Petra is part of a strategy to increase water supply in Pla de Mallorca. The plan includes regulation tanks, as well as new control and connection infrastructure to ensure supply and reduce pressure on overused groundwater reservoirs.

The project

Reinforcing the mains water supply network is one of the priorities of water planning in Mallorca, especially in areas where groundwater is of low quality or has been overused. With the aim of securing supply and promoting more water sustainable management, the Balearic Government has led the construction of a pipeline between the municipalities of Maria de la Salut and Petra, a key section in the future supply system to Llevant on the eastern side of the island.

The plan includes a series of technical actions such as the construction of a 6,000 m³ regulation tank and a control building in Maria de la Salut, as well as a new main drinking water pipeline. In Petra, another 1,920 m³ tank will be built, while in Ariany a connection branch will be set up, ready for future extensions to Manacor and the east coast.

The plan’s total investment amounts to over €12 million. The works have been designed to provide a long-term service that addresses both current demand and future situations of population growth and increased tourism in the area.

This infrastructure will improve the quality of the water supplied to the municipalities in Pla de Mallorca and will reduce pressure on local groundwater, thus improving recharge. According to sources at the Balearic Water Agency (ABAQUA), this is a key action for balancing the island’s water network and moving towards a stronger system in the face of climate change.
