Sant Llorenç Modernises Its Coastal Recycled Water Network

The municipality is introducing remote control and sectorisation to the recycled water system

What does it consist of?

Sant Llorenç Town Council has completed the renovation and digitalisation of the recycled water network in its coastal towns. These works increase pressure and flow, reduce leaks and expand the irrigation of green areas and street cleaning with non-drinking water, helping to ease pressure on aquifers.

The project

For years, the recycled water network that supplies Sa Coma, S'Illot and part of Cala Millor has been suffering from leaks, insufficient flow rates and the lack of sectorisation. These failures prevented the full use of water treated at the Sa Coma treatment plant, limiting its use for garden irrigation and street cleaning during the peak season.

With the works now completed, the network has nearly 1.9 kilometres of new high-density polyethylene pipes, meshed and sectorised with shut-off valves. This improvement makes it possible to raise operating pressure and ensure a constant supply in all areas, including those furthest away from the town centre.

The system is also equipped with three electromagnetic flowmeters and six pressure sensors, connected to the WWTP by remote control. This equipment, together with five photovoltaic-powered base stations, allows the remote control of consumption and pressure in real time, which improves efficiency and aids the detection of incidents.

The total budget for the project is over €430,000. Beyond technical modernisation, the change instantly reduces the use of drinking water for irrigation and cleaning, which tackles the overexploitation of aquifers and prevents unnecessary discharge into the sea. The municipality thus achieves greater water sustainability and security of supply in the peak months of tourism demand.
