The project
The project to build the Balearic Islands School of Hospitality in Ibiza took place between 2017 and 2023, seeking to provide the island with its own space for technical training in catering and tourism services. It was set up in one of the old buildings on the Sa Coma site, in Artillería, through a comprehensive refurbishment that made it possible to reuse existing infrastructure and adapt it for new purposes.
Designed as a high-performance school, it offers specialisation courses from the training plan of the Balearic hospitality network, together with professional qualifications in cooking, baking, catering, rural accommodation and other areas. Training is aimed at both young people qualifying for the first time and working professionals through refresher and continuous improvement courses.
As well as new training courses, the project included action focused on culinary outreach and boosting traditional local cuisine. It also studied new trends and how to improve language skills in the tourism industry. This focus on training seeks to respond to the challenges of the labour market in a destination with a strong international reputation.
The work involved significant public investment, part of which came from sustainable tourism tax. Building 402, a former military kitchen, was refurbished to house classrooms, training kitchens and common areas, forming a modern space that now operates at full capacity as a hub for knowledge and employability on the island.
