Menorca Modernises its Water Network to Reduce Losses and Increase Efficiency

The “Menorca Agua” project will upgrade key infrastructure across the island’s municipalities

What does it consist of?

Menorca is leading island-wide actions to renew its water infrastructure and optimise the use of a particularly limited resource. The project will target water supply and sewage networks, tanks and pumps, with the aim of reducing losses, reinforcing the service and protecting the island’s aquifers.

The project

Water management has become a structural issue in Menorca, where most of the supply depends on aquifers that are under heavy pressure, especially in the months of peak tourism. In this context, the Island Council and local councils have set up the Menorca Agua project, an initiative aimed at updating infrastructure that, in many cases, is now beyond its useful life.

The project foresees improvements to supply, sewage and storage. The works include the renovation of pipes to reduce leaks and failures, the implementation of separate rainwater networks, the construction of new regulating tanks and the installation of more efficient pumps in catchment wells. Improvements to the fire prevention network and tertiary treatment at the Maó-Es Castell WWTP to expand the use of recycled water are also expected.

The project also includes complementary actions in town centres, such as the removal of architectural barriers, the replacement of pavements and the burying of infrastructure in old quarters where work is carried out. This combination of water improvement and urban renewal is intended to ensure that the investment has a wider effect on the quality of life and functioning in each municipality.

The actions are being implemented the local councils, by means of agreements with the Island Council, and is underpinned by the rationale of island consensus. Beyond the specific work in each municipality, the core objective is the same: to have a more robust, efficient network adapted to an island where water has a strong influence on both environmental sustainability and daily life.
