The project

Tourism continues to be one of Menorca's main economic driving forces, but it is also one of the factors that exerts most pressure on its island. Aware of this reality, the Island Council has designed a comprehensive plan to work on the access roads to the most frequented tourist areas, reorganising mobility to make the arrival of visitors compatible with the conservation of the environment.

The project, with a planned investment of over 8 million euros until 2026, aims to eliminate unnecessary traffic by improving roads and paths, implementing pedestrian and cycle routes, and promoting public transport. This redesign aims not only to reduce pollutant emissions, but also to reduce noise and improve the experience for residents and tourists. In addition to the physical improvement of the access roads, the plan includes awareness initiatives such as interpretation centres and information points.

The aim is to encourage tourism that understands the place it is visiting, and is committed to a more respectful relationship with biodiversity and natural resources. The island's town councils will carry out the interventions in their respective areas, under the coordination of the Island Council.

This type of project reflects an increasingly widespread trend in island territories: acting on infrastructure rather than on demand. In the words of the engineers involved, "the quality of a visit also starts with how you get there". Menorca is committed to accessibility that enhances—rather than compromises—its status as a Biosphere Reserve.
