What does it consist of?

The Institut Balear de l'Habitatge is leading the restoration of the Convent of Sant Francesc de Paula, in the municipality of Campos, to convert it into a research centre for traditional Balearic architecture. The project will be funded entirely through the Sustainable Tourism Tax (ITS) fund and will be carried out in several phases between 2025 and 2027.

The project

The former Convent of the Mínimos, located in the historic centre of Campos and listed as a Bien de Interés Cultural (Cultural Interest Asset), will be redeveloped as the headquarters of the future Centre for Research into Traditional Architecture of the Balearic Islands (CREATIB). This full redevelopment project seeks to enhance the value of built heritage and promote innovation based on knowledge of local construction techniques.

The works, led by the Balearic Housing Institute (IBAVI), involves not only the structural restoration of the building, but also the adaptation of its rooms to house labs, offices and workrooms used for research into traditional architecture. The aim is to create a hub for knowledge about sustainable construction materials, techniques and solutions, useful for both new construction and refurbishment.

The total budget of the project amounts to €6 million, funded by the ITS fund. Work will take place over three yearly phases until 2027, from project execution to the functional adaptation of the building. Scientific and technical equipment will be provided through additional funding channels linked to R&D&I programmes.

As well as preserving an iconic building, the project aims to promote economic, social and educational changes in the municipality of Campos. The initiative focuses on knowledge transfer, sustainable construction and the public use of heritage as a resource for local development.
