Calvià Town Council has finished restoration works on the hydraulic system at Galatzó, a publicly-owned estate, with the support of sustainable tourism tax. These works have made it possible to repair gutters and mills to make use of water and protect this unique part of the Balearic Islands' ethnological heritage.

Galatzó public estate is one of the largest and most iconic areas in Mallorca, with more than 14 million m2 of natural, agricultural and cultural heritage. One of its most important ethnographic assets is its hydraulic system, a key structure in the collection and drainage of underground water, which until now had been damaged and in disuse.
The plan involved repairing the gutters and mills in this system and putting them into operation, with the aim of halting further deterioration and making use of a water resource that’s gradually becoming lost. This action not only ensures the sustainable use of water, but also recognises the significance of unique infrastructure in the Tramuntana Mountains.
As well as protecting the hydraulic system, the plan seeks to uphold the traditional agricultural, livestock and forestry uses that characterise this area. The restoration of these facilities also means the public can visit them, thus offering a true example of traditional Mallorcan hydraulic architecture and supporting the conservation of its cultural history.
With an executed budget of more than €780,000, funded entirely through sustainable tourism tax, the plan has managed to bring the sustainable management of natural resources into line with restoring ethnological heritage at Galatzó estate, ensuring it can still be enjoyed by future generations.
