Restoring the Woodland Around Bellver Castle

Improvements to walking routes and environmental protection in one of Palma's main green lungs

What does it consist of?

Palma City Council has launched a complete restoration project to revamp the entry points to Bellver Castle and boost the conservation of the surrounding woodland. The project, funded by the Sustainable Tourism Tax (ITS) fund, includes the removal of barriers, new fire prevention measures and ecological restoration work.

The project

Bellver Castle and its surrounding woodland form part of Palma's iconic landscape. Despite its historical and ecological value, the area was lacking in terms of accessibility and conservation. With the support of the ITS fund, the City Council is promoting a project that expands on improvements made in previous years.

The project includes the execution of phase 4 of the perimeter path, allowing for a circular route accessible on foot and by bicycle. A network of hydrants connected to strategically located reservoirs will also be installed as a self-protection measure against fires. This infrastructure has been designed in accordance with the layout of existing roads.

In terms of the environment, reforestation work will be carried out with native species such as pine and holm oak, as well as pest control and the removal of invasive plant species. Damaged street furniture and signage will also be revamped to comply with universal accessibility standards.

Beyond the impact on landscape and tourism, the project reinforces the role of Bellver Woods as Palma's green lung and is committed to more sustainable mobility. The initiative also responds to the strategic pillars of the Balearic Islands 2030 plan by fostering resilience in the face of climate change and improving territorial cohesion.
