Work to Protect Camí de Cavalls From Erosion

Targeted works to protect the cultural and environmental value of the route

What does it consist of?

The Camí de Cavalls, a historic path around Menorca, has undergone works to tackle erosion identified along the route. The project

The Camí de Cavalls (GR-223) is a route that runs along a large part of Menorca’s coastline, crossing through the island’s unique ecosystems and landscapes. Its origins date back to the time of French rule, when it was built for military purposes. Over the centuries, urban development and the closure of sections by private properties led to the loss of part of the original route.

In recent years, intensive recreational use and exposure to weathering processes have led to significant erosion along various stretches. To tackle this situation, Menorca Island Council devised a management and recovery plan based on a technical assessment that divided the route into 19 sections and located the most damaged parts of the path.

The actions have focused on slowing down erosion through low-impact solutions, following traditional construction methods. Stone steps and small retaining walls have been installed, water channels have been built to manage runoff, heavily eroded ground has been levelled and redistributed, and the path has been cordoned off with posts and ropes to control traffic. Local stone paving has also been chosen to ensure the ground remains strong.

The works have made it possible to maintain the path intact and ensure it remains fit for public use, while also protecting the landscape and the historical heritage it represents. The project has been carried out with special attention to landscape integration, preserving the traditional character of the path and its connection with the natural and cultural environment of Menorca.
