What does it consist of?

Alcudia Town Council has completed restoration project to improve several sections of the medieval walls surrounding the town’s old centre. Funded by sustainable tourism tax, the plan serves to protect this immense example of military architecture, reinforce its cultural value and improve it as a tourist attraction.

The project

Alcudia’s medieval walls are essential to Mallorca’s heritage. They are fully protected under Spain’s conservation regime as both a historical/artistic monument (Conjunto Histórico Artístico) and a cultural asset (Bien de Interés Cultural). The works are part of the Annual Plan for the Promotion of Sustainable Tourism, specifically in the area of restoring historical and cultural heritage. The priority is to enhance the most important monuments for society and tourism.

The project has two main goals: firstly, to comply with the legal obligation to conserve these protected assets and, secondly, to ensure they continue to be an economic and cultural driving force for the municipality and the island. The proper conservation of the walled enclosure helps to keep attracting the thousands of tourists who visit the medieval old town every year.

The work focused on restoring several damaged sections, respecting their original style and ensuring their structural integrity. The works were carried out between 2017 and 2018, with an investment of over €442,000.

Although located in Alcudia, the project has had a positive impact on other municipalities. The walls are part of the shared heritage of the Balearic Islands, and their conservation reinforces the island’s cultural identity. It’s also an attraction beyond sun and beach tourism, offering more to those wishing to experience tradition and culture.
