Cultivation in mountain areas entails additional costs and more uncertain profitability, factors that have accelerated the progressive abandonment of farming in recent decades. To counteract this trend, compensatory payments are promoted to enable farmers to continue working the land in areas where generational replacement and continuity are particularly threatened.
The project plans to allocate 2.6 million euros to the FOGAIBA budget to support several calls for applications for grants aimed at farmers operating in mountain areas. Due to their location, these farms face greater logistical and production-related difficulties, which makes them particularly vulnerable to the abandonment of all activity.
The grants are part of the CAP Strategic Plan and are designed to partially cover the additional costs and income lost as a result of this situation. Its purpose is twofold: to ensure feasible economic activity and to help preserve the rural landscape, the deterioration of which has ecological, social and cultural consequences.
The focus is on the Tramuntana Mountains, which represent over 28% of Mallorca's surface area and are a fragile ecosystem. These grants aim to maintain the function of crops as natural firebreaks and soil stabilisers. The first calls for applications were launched in early 2023 and are still ongoing.
