Hydraulic Connections to Improve Water Supply in the North of Mallorca

The project allows for two-way flow between Sa Marineta and s'Estremera and improves system control

What does it consist of?

The construction of three hydraulic connections between Sa Marineta and the s'Estremera groundwater reservoir will allow water to be distributed in both directions, thus improving supply in the northern part of Mallorca and helping to restore groundwater resources. The actions also include a key bypass to improve the system’s regulation and pressure.

The project

Effective water management in Mallorca depends on an increasingly interconnected and flexible water network. In this context, the plan to build a bypass between Sa Marineta and s'Estremera aims to reinforce the water transport system in order to adapt to climate variability and the pressure on groundwater resources. With funding from sustainable tourism tax (ITS), the plan foresees works in several municipalities in Pla de Mallorca.

The works involve the installation of three new major connections equipped with control, operation and regulation systems, which allow for two-way flow in the pipeline between the Sa Marineta facilities and the s'Estremera groundwater reservoir. This two-way system makes it possible to supply the north of the island, and in future, the Llevant region, depending on the availability of resources.

The plan also includes the construction of a bypass between Consell and the main pipeline, equipped with a regulator valve to adjust flow and pressure. This improves upstream water distribution and provides greater autonomy to the island’s water system, especially in times of water stress or for specific needs.

The works have affected several sections of the Camí Vell de Muro path in the municipalities of Consell, Binissalem, Inca and Llubí. With an investment of more than €300,000, the project not only makes the island’s supply more stable, but also helps to recharge overused groundwater reservoirs such as the one in Sa Marineta.
