Two estates in southern Ibiza to be used for conservation and environmental education

What does it consist of?

The Council of Ibiza is acquiring two estates of over 240,000 m² in the area of Cala Jondal, within the Ses Salines Natural Park, as it seeks to conserve unique habitats and create a space for environmental education in a place of great importance, both ecologically and in terms of heritage.

The project

The initiative stems from the need to boost environmental conservation in areas subject to high pressure from tourism and urbanisation. Against this background, acquiring protected rural land is seen as a strategic way of preserving the island's natural heritage and increasing public awareness of it.

The project will see the purchase of two private estates located in Puig des Jondal, totalling 240,774 m². This land, in a good state of conservation, features habitats of great importance such as coastal junipers, cliffs, old cropland undergoing natural revegetation and dense wooded areas with native species.

The land is part of the Ses Salines Natural Park and of the Natura 2000 Network. Part of the area is at very high risk of forest fires, so the takeover will allow for better risk management and contribute to the protection of the nearby marine environment, where meadows of Posidonia oceanica (a type of seagrass) are found.

The aim is to use the space as an environmental education centre linked to the Sa Cala des Jondal youth camp. Activities will focus on raising awareness, environmental interpretation and connecting with the landscape, all in line with the principles of sustainability and orderly public use.
