Three major valves replaced to improve water control in Pla de Mallorca’s main supply network

What does it consist of?

The Balearic Water Agency has upgraded major valves on the section of pipeline connecting Son Sitges, Maria de la Salut and Santa Maria del Camí. These works aim to improve water control in the main network, increase supply to several municipalities, and support the recharge of overused aquifers such as the one in Sa Marineta.

The project

The project is part of wider actions that seek to strengthen the upstream supply network managed by the Balearic Water Agency (ABAQUA). This network makes it possible to distribute water from key sources, such as the s'Estremera and Sa Marineta aquifers and the Alcudia desalination plant, to inland areas of the island where supply depends on external resources.

Specifically, work has been carried out on the T-piece that connects the pipes between Son Sitges, Maria de la Salut and Santa Maria. Three critical valves have been replaced and new remote-control systems have been installed to regulate the flow of water through the control centre located in Son Pacs, Palma. The procedure has also included the construction of a 170-metre trench to secure the power supply for the actuators.

These improvements make it possible to adjust water allocation according to demand, reducing pressure on the most depleted groundwater systems and increasing operational flexibility. This ensures supply even in situations of water stress or technical emergencies, reinforcing the strength of the water supply system in the areas of Pla and Raiguer.

The plan has been carried out with an investment of €193,600. Beyond the immediate benefit in terms of water management, the plan is part of a broader strategy to modernise the island’s water cycle, including digitalisation, automation and improved quality control.
