Improvements to Accessibility and Bird Hides at Lagoons on the Balearic Islands

A plan to enhance the visitor experience and protect natural assets

What does it consist of?

Three nature parks in the Balearic Islands are working to adapt paths, bird hides and bird watching platforms. The plan aims to improve accessibility for visitors and cyclists, reinforce safety and protect birdlife, with works taking place at the following nature parks: S'Albufera de Mallorca, S'Albufera d'Es Grau and Ses Salines d'Eivissa i Formentera.

The project

The Balearic Islands’ lagoons and wetlands receive thousands of visitors every year, both residents and tourists. This high footfall requires a constant balance between accessibility and environmental protection. The Government has planned to take action in three of these protected beauty spots to ensure visits are safe and have minimum impact on wildlife and vegetation.

At S'Albufera de Mallorca, the plan involves improvements to four main paths, currently affected by structural damage and drainage problems. Also expected are repairs to the entrance of the information centre and admin buildings, as well as reinforcements to a flood-damaged seawall. These works aim to ensure the routes remain usable and to keep the park’s infrastructure in working order.

In Menorca, S'Albufera d'Es Grau Nature Park will see work performed along three key routes: Sa Gola, Santa Matrona and Cala Llimpa. Work will focus on path maintenance, managing erosion processes and improving viewpoints. The aim is to protect the visitor experience and prevent the gradual deterioration of a vulnerable environment.

Meanwhile, at Ses Salines d'Eivissa i Formentera, work will take place on the route between the natural pools at Can Marroig and the information centre. A raised platform will also be installed to allow visitors to watch waterbirds and enjoy the lagoon landscape without interfering with their habitat. The initiative also includes information boards that will help to identify species in the area and understand the ecological importance of this wetland.
