What does it consist of?

A regional scheme is allowing more than 40 municipalities in the Balearic Islands to carry out urgent work on water supply, sewage and rainwater networks. The investment, which is over €74 million, aims to reduce water loss and ensure more efficient supply in the face of increasing pressure on water networks.

The project

Sustainable management of the water cycle has been established as one of the political priorities of Balearic lawmakers. In this context, a scheme has been launched to support municipal water infrastructure projects, with the aim of boosting efficiency in the distribution and collection of drinking water, wastewater and rainwater.

The plan foresees work in a wide variety of areas, from large town centres such as Inca and Sant Josep de sa Talaia, to small municipalities such as Estellencs and Lloret de Vistalegre. The planned works include renovating obsolete networks, installing remote reading and leak detection systems, and the construction of new regulation tanks.

The total investment amounts to €74.6 million and will be deployed between 2025 and 2027. In Binissalem alone, for example, a project to improve and restructure the rainwater network will be carried out with a budget of more than €2.7 million. In Campanet, a number of measures have been included, from drafting plans to upgrading the network and fitting smart meters.

Municipalities have reported recurring difficulties in financing this type of infrastructure, which is often outside their normal budgetary capacities. This scheme provides not only for the execution of works, but also the technical planning required to move towards a stronger water model in line with the needs of the future.
