Forestry action to tackle climate change in the Balearic Islands

Project funded by Sustainable Tourism Tax (ITS) set to adapt 125 hectares of forest to new climate context in the Balearic Islands

What does it consist of?

The Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Natural Environment has launched an initiative that seeks to strengthen the capacity of the Balearic forests to address climate change. The project, with an investment of 1.3 million euros from the ITS fund, entails experimental actions on 125 hectares distributed between Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza-Formentera until March 2026.

The project

Climate change is already having visible effects on Mediterranean ecosystems, and the Balearic Islands, with their particular water vulnerability, are no exception. Rising temperatures, changes in rainfall and more frequent fires mark the new ecological context. In response, the Balearic Government is promoting an active forest management project to adapt island habitats.

With interventions planned on 35 hectares in Mallorca, 25 in Menorca and 65 in the Pityusic Islands, the work includes forest thinning to reduce competition between trees, scrub control, and opening up areas for extensive grazing. In addition, practices are being introduced to improve regeneration from seeds, which increases the genetic and structural diversity of forests, a key factor when faced with extreme events such as droughts or pests.

One of the innovative aspects of the project is its experimental approach: different forest density models and their impact on carbon sequestration or fire resistance are compared. Results are expected to be monitored in the medium term, which will allow for fine-tuning of adaptation strategies in future campaigns. The use of specialised machinery, such as a spider excavator, enables work to be carried out on steep slopes, thus increasing efficiency and safety.

The actions address the objectives of the Balearic Islands Forestry Plan and the IV Forest Fire Defence Plan. According to the regional minister Joan Simonet, "mechanising and planning forest management is a direct way to reduce risks and adapt our landscapes to a changing climate". The project aims not only to protect the natural heritage, but also to create employment in the low season and contribute to the ecological resilience of the territory.
