The Sustainable Tourism Tax (ITS) fund is supporting a scheme to improve tourist destinations on the Balearic Islands through quality and sustainability

What does it consist of?

The new tourism governance scheme led by the Balearic Islands Strategic Tourism Agency (AETIB) reinforces the role of local councils in improving the quality of destinations. Funding will go towards initiatives ranging from implementing quality systems (SICTED) with an expected investment of €8 million.

The project

With the aim of improving the tourism experience and raising quality standards in tourist destinations, AETIB has launched a scheme offering direct support to local entities. The initiative, which is funded by the ITS fund, offers support to strengthen both businesses and public services linked to tourism.

The scheme is structured around two main pillars. The first, focusing on the Integrated System of Tourism Quality in Destinations (SICTED), includes subsidies for training, consultancy, infrastructure improvement and specialist municipal staff. The second, linked to Smart Tourism Destinations (STD), funds assessments to facilitate the transition towards a more innovative, accessible and sustainable management model.

One of the key elements of the system is the coordinated work between the public and private spheres, through local quality roundtables. These sessions help to identify needs, guide strategies and ensure businesses and governments are involved. Currently, there are already 21 destinations signed up to SICTED in the Balearic Islands, and the plan is to reach 42 by 2028.

The budget set for the scheme amounts to €10 million, of which more than 97% will be allocated to the quality pillar (SICTED). This initiative boosts the capacity of the municipalities to lead tourism transformation directly from the area, taking into account competitiveness as well as environmental and social balance.
