A comprehensive plan is clearing rubbish in the Balearic Islands while offering work to vulnerable groups
What does it consist of?
In the Balearic Islands, a yearly cleaning plan combines the environmental clean-up of beaches, coves and public spaces with the recruitment of people at risk of social exclusion. The programme has made it possible to restore damaged areas, remove waste and provide jobs with a positive impact on the region.

The project
Waste management in the Balearic Islands has come up against two major challenges in recent years: uncontrolled dumping in public spaces, and the accumulation of waste in coastal areas in the low season. This plan has devised a comprehensive response to both problems, with the collaboration of organisations that work with vulnerable groups.
This has included the clean-up of hotspots identified in a digital mapping database, as well as the removal of rubbish in public spaces. Meanwhile, cove clean-up days have been organised in winter, carried out on the ground, to ensure the conservation of beaches and swimming areas.
Beyond improving the environmental quality and image of coastal and inland areas, the initiative has supported the social inclusion of people in vulnerable situations. Through their involvement, job and training opportunities have been created relating to the management and protection of the natural environment.
This approach shows that cooperation between the authorities, social organisations and citizens can make a real impact on both environmental conservation and social cohesion.
