An island-wide project will renovate the water network and protect Menorca’s aquifers

What does it consist of?

Menorca is leading a project to modernise its water infrastructure and improve water quality throughout the island. The initiative aims to renovate the water supply and sewage networks, reduce leaks and optimise the use of water resources in all eight municipalities, with the aim of protecting aquifers and moving towards more efficient water management.

The project

Water is one of the most sensitive resources in Menorca. The island, declared a Biosphere Reserve in 1993, faces the challenge of managing a limited resource in a context marked by rising human pressure and the effects of climate change. Making the water cycle more efficient has become a priority to secure supply and protect aquifers.

The “Menorca Agua” project proposes works on an island-wide scale that will impact all eight of the island’s municipalities. The works focus on the renovation of the drinking water and sewage networks, some of which are very old or do not reach certain settlements.

The modernisation of this infrastructure will reduce leaks, minimise breakdowns and improve the management of the piping system. The project will also see the incorporation of photovoltaic energy in hydraulic systems and the burying of infrastructure in town centres, in order to reduce energy impact and enhance the urban integration of the networks.

Beyond optimising supply, the initiative includes measures to reinforce the fire hydrant system and improve rainwater harvesting and use. The aim of these actions is to reduce pressure on the island’s aquifers, as overexploitation has affected the quality of drinking water in recent years.

The works, led by Menorca Island Council, are part of the island’s broader climate adaptation and sustainability strategies, aimed at achieving more responsible management of water resources in the future.
