Environmental Clean-up and Social Inclusion Come Together on the Balearic Coast

A plan to improve the quality of the coastline together with workers at risk of social exclusion

What does it consist of?

The Balearic Government is backing an initiative in Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera that targets both the maintenance of natural spaces on the coast and the employment people in vulnerable situations. The actions are focused on areas of special ecological importance, such as the Natura 2000 Network and other protected areas, with results already taking shape.

The project

Funded by sustainable tourism tax, a unique plan is being developed that combines coastal protection with social inclusion. The proposal, promoted by the Balearic Environmental Council, aims to take action in coastal areas of high environmental importance, particularly through cleaning, conservation and maintenance measures, with the active involvement of people at risk of social exclusion.

The actions are focused on sites in the Natura 2000 Network and other protected natural areas defined by Spanish law on environmental conservation (Ley 5/2005). There, work teams carry out tasks such as waste collection and sorting, control of invasive species, environmental monitoring and raising awareness among users. This is all in line with technical planning led by the Environmental Quality Service.

The plan also includes the collection of data and images, as well as collaboration with town councils, island councils and social/volunteering organisations. This cross-cutting approach serves not only to reinforce maintenance in fragile areas, but also to promote environmental awareness, along with inclusion in society and employment.

Although initially planned to be implemented between 2018 and 2024, the timeline has been extended to 2025. With 91% of the budget executed, the outlook is positive: effective environmental clean-up and socially meaningful job creation.
