What does it consist of?

With severe structural damage detected in the joists and pillars, the Costa d'en Blanes service reservoir will undergo a key refurbishment to prevent its irreversible deterioration. The project will guarantee the supply of drinking water to Calvià and Andratx by optimising resources and avoiding the construction of new infrastructure.

The project

Built in 2001, the Costa d'en Blanes service reservoir, managed by Abaqua, is an essential part of the water supply system that connects Palma with the municipalities of Calvià and Andratx. It receives flows from the Son Pacs reservoir and from the Sa Estremera and Sa Font de Sa Costera aquifers. For years it has been suffering from structural deficiencies that threaten its operability.

A technical report concluded that the slab joists show cracks, concrete spalling and corroded reinforcement, symptoms of advanced corrosion. The action set to take place includes repair using structural mortar, carbon fibre reinforcement and waterproofing of the walls and roof to stop leaks. Temporary entrances for specialist machinery will also be opened.

With a budget of 1.5 million euros, the refurbishment aims to extend the useful life of the reservoir without occupying more land or erecting new structures. This enables the continued use of an existing facility in a consolidated environment, thus avoiding any additional impacts on the surrounding area.

The intervention not only guarantees the structural and health-related safety of the reservoir, but also improves the efficiency of the water system, reduces water losses and reinforces the service to two of the most populated municipalities on the island. An important step in the modernisation of public infrastructure linked to sustainable water management.
