Calvià is converting the Sa Torre Nova estate into a heritage park with support from the Sustainable Tourism Tax (ITS) fund

A place packed with history, rationalist architecture and environmental value is preparing for a complete transformation. Calvià Council is finalising a project to turn Sa Torre Nova estate into a cultural park open to the public. Funded by the ITS fund, work will start in phases from the end of 2025.

The project

At the coastal tip of Magaluf, the Sa Torre Nova estate guards a 17th-century defence tower and two rationalist houses that marked urban expansion in the 1960s. Calvià Council, with funding from the Sustainable Tourism Tax (ITS) fund, is now promoting a complete redevelopment project that seeks to combine heritage, social cohesion and environmental sustainability.

The complex will be converted into a cultural tourism park open to the public. The tower will be restored as an exhibition piece representing the coastal defence system, while one of the houses will be a visitor centre and museum space. The other will be used for cultural and social purposes, with a museum collection exhibiting domestic architecture from the mid-20th century. The plan also includes a park with footpaths, viewpoints, green spaces and accessible furniture.

The Council of Mallorca's Heritage Department will collaborate to oversee the technical accuracy of the works, given that all three buildings are listed. The Environmental Department is also involved due to the ecological sensitivity of the area. The department is considering adding elements that reinforce the natural value of the site and prevent its deterioration.

Beyond historical and ecological value, the project involves an important social dimension: the new space will not be detached from the urban landscape of Magaluf, a neighbourhood identified as vulnerable. Land use planning is being worked on with the Department of Culture, and work is set to begin towards the end of 2025, once the technical drafting contract has been awarded. The work will be carried out in phases, prioritising structural safety and perimeter enclosure to avoid risks during the process.
