The new space strengthens culture and tourism at the Calvià site

Calvià Town Council has completed the building of a museum at Puig de Sa Morisca Archaeological Site. The project provides the site with a museum to exhibit its archaeological heritage and to enrich culture and tourism.

The project

Puig de Sa Morisca Archaeological Site, in operation since 1997 thanks to collaboration between the Town Council and the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), covers over 45 hectares and is one of the densest archaeological sites in Mallorca. It’s also home to important natural and landscape heritage, with more than 6 km of trails, and attracts more than 25,000 visitors a year, making it a major cultural and environmental asset for the municipality.

However, the lack of a museum infrastructure had limited the park’s potential to display and share information about the artefacts found over decades of excavations. This shortcoming meant the public lacked access to a full explanation of the heritage at the site. It also made it difficult to organise workshops and other educational and tourism activities.

The museum has been designed as a facility that complies with current regulations and allows archaeological collections from the site and surrounding areas to be housed and put on display. It also expands cultural activities in the municipality and the southeast of Mallorca. It provides visitors of the site with an educational, informative space that boosts its attractiveness in the low season and positions it as a must-visit destination in the Balearic Islands

With a budget of more than €1.5 million, the museum represents a step further in the management and promotion of local archaeological heritage. The initiative reaffirms Calvià's commitment to the conservation of its cultural heritage and to the development of sustainable, non-seasonal tourism tied to the island's identity.
