Electrification of water service vehicles to boost the environmental efficiency of utilities
What does it consist of?
Palma City Council, through the local authority-owned company EMAYA, has replaced 24 vehicles with electric models and installed their respective charging points. The action is part of local plans to reduce emissions and improve air quality.

The project
EMAYA, a company owned by the local council in charge of water management and other public services in Palma, has upgraded part of its vehicle fleet with electric models. In total, 24 models have been added including eleven passenger cars, twelve vans and one truck, replacing diesel and petrol vehicles.
This action responds to the City Council's strategic plans, including its Sustainable Energy Action Plan (PAES), air quality improvement plan and noise reduction plan. These plans prioritise the transition to cleaner technology in local council services that have significant operations in urban areas.
In addition to purchasing the new vehicles, the plan has also seen the installation of electric charging points to ensure the self-sufficiency of the vehicles. This is a necessary step to reinforce EMAYA's role as a key public actor in the local energy transition.
The action was carried out between 2018 and 2019. The executed budget was €764,720, funded by sustainable tourism tax. Palma is one of the municipalities that has taken on the largest volume of renovation work under the joint electrification scheme of Mallorca’s public water network (Aguas Públicas de Mallorca).
