The plan includes new technology, biogas and modular solutions for tourist areas

What does it consist of?

Balearic sewage and wastewater treatment infrastructure is facing an ambitious overhaul. With more than €37 million, improvements will be made to key wastewater treatment plants, such as Inca and Santa Ponça, as well as installing modular systems in saturated areas such as Platja de Muro and renovating deteriorated collectors.

The project

The Balearic sewage treatment system has been structurally damaged for decades. Many facilities were built at the end of the last century. Although they were pioneering at the time, they are now insufficient in the face of demographic pressure and new environmental standards. The current strategy focuses on comprehensive modernisation to ensure the quality of treated water and reduce the impact on vulnerable areas.

Planned work includes the expansion of the Inca WWTP, which will double its treatment capacity to serve up to 50,000 people. Major improvements are also planned for the general sewage network in Sant Antoni-Sant Josep, increasing the discharge flow by 62%.

Other municipalities will also receive significant investments. In Santa Ponça, a new multifunctional building will be built for the sewage treatment plant, the urban environment will be streamlined and energy efficiency will be improved. In Binissalem and Son Servera, the facilities will be adapted to process a larger volume of sludge, thus generating biogas and reducing the use of fossil fuels.

One of the most immediate challenges is Platja de Muro, where the capacity of the current facilities is exceeded by more than 50% during high season. The solution proposed is to implement a modular treatment system to reduce the seasonal overload. In total, the interventions will cover ten projects across different parts of the archipelago, with a total investment of €37.3 million between 2025 and 2028.
