What does it consist of?

The University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) has launched a strategic plan to strengthen its scientific activity, attract talent and consolidate lines of research that contribute to the sustainable development of the archipelago. The programme is structured around human resources, infrastructure and funding.

The project

In a region as dependent on tourism as the Balearic Islands, diversifying the economy has become a strategic priority. Scientific research, until now largely overlooked in public debate, plays a key role in this process. The UIB, as the only public university in the archipelago, takes on this challenge with a five-year plan that seeks to consolidate its role as a leader in knowledge generation.

The project has three main areas: attracting researchers, improving scientific infrastructure and funding its own projects. Young talent will be encouraged to join through pre- and post-doctoral contracts and international profiles will be sought after, with mobility between universities being promoted. Moreover, laboratories will be reinforced with new equipment and emerging lines of research resulting from international collaborations will continue.

The initiative also includes indicators to measure impact: number of researchers joined, scientific publications, external funding or number of competitive projects. Beyond the data, the commitment is clear: to provide the UIB with the necessary resources to contribute to applied knowledge in areas such as climate change, health, marine biodiversity and the circular economy.

This effort positions research as a pillar of the future for the Balearic Islands. Investing in knowledge is not only about investing in science, but also in quality employment, territorial innovation and resilience in the face of major global challenges.
