ITS-funded project set to modernise science teaching in the Balearic Islands

What does it consist of?

The campus of the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) will welcome a new Faculty of Science with over 10,000 m² for teaching and research. The project will modernise obsolete spaces and strengthen key areas such as climate change, biomedicine and marine biodiversity, with a special focus on the future offer in marine sciences.

The project

For years, the University of the Balearic Islands has held leading positions in fields such as ecology, physics and oceanography. However, its current facilities have serious shortcomings that hamper both teaching and research. Part of the current faculty building is over 40 years old and does not meet basic requirements in terms of accessibility, safety and energy efficiency.

In order to reverse this situation, plans are in place to build a new building and partially renovate existing structures. The intervention, divided into two phases, will cover an area of over 10,750 m² and will combine classrooms, laboratories and spaces for research staff. The project is adapted to current standards and prepares the university for new studies related to marine sciences.

The work will remove asbestos, ensure double emergency exits and improve the layout of the laboratories, which are currently dispersed and not overly functional. In addition, key services such as the distribution of technical gases will be centralised, and spaces will be set up in line with the real needs of the research groups.

The new academic complex aims to consolidate the scientific capacity of the UIB and enhance its contribution to applied knowledge regarding sustainability, health and the blue economy. Organisations such as IMEDEA and SOCIB will actively participate and be linked to the future Pol Marí, strategic infrastructure for the Balearic Islands' research ecosystem.
