What does it consist of?

Between 2017 and 2018, a line of financial support was made available to new organic farmers and livestock breeders in the Balearic Islands. The measure removed barriers to accessing RDP grants for those who had not been eligible previously due to lack of funds.

The project

Organic farming has seen growth in the Balearic Islands over the last decade. Not only because of its key role in land conservation, but also because of growing demand from both locals and tourists. However, public aid available has not always been enough to support this growth.

For years, funds from previous aid schemes under the 2014–2020 Rural Development Programme (RDP) were fully spoken for, preventing new producers from accessing aid. The impossibility of offering more aid until 2019 sidelined those who were beginning their transition to more sustainable practices.

To address this situation, the Balearic Government promoted the specific allocation of sustainable tourism tax funds to cover measure 11.2 of the RDP. This made it possible to open up access to grants for new organic farmers and livestock farmers between 2017 and 2018, offering financial support during their early years of activity in certified production.

Beyond financial support, the project responded to a structural need in the industry: to recognise the importance of organic farming in biodiversity management, soil and water protection, and the fight against climate change. Overall, new additions to the aid system were made possible at a key moment for its reinforcement in the region.
