New Water Pipeline Connects Petra and Manacor to Ease Pressure on Water Supply

The new water infrastructure improves the water supply and protects the area’s aquifers

What does it consist of?

Between 2017 and 2018, a water pipeline over 15 kilometres long was laid between Petra and Manacor to ensure the water supply under optimal conditions. This initiative sought to ease pressure on aquifers and safeguard an essential resource in a place affected by water scarcity and saltwater intrusion.

The project

Shortages in both the quantity and quality of water have been a constant problem across eastern Mallorca. Water planning on the island, led by the Balearic Government, has sought to address this structural problem through infrastructure that bolsters water supply from alternative, more sustainable sources.

In this context, a project to construct a 15,350-metre-long pipeline between the municipalities of Petra and Manacor was carried out. As well as the pipeline, an 18,000 m3 regulation tank was installed in Manacor, designed to improve water management in periods of peak demand.

The goal was twofold: to improve access to drinking water for communities facing supply difficulties; and to ease pressure on local aquifers, many of which are overexploited or at risk of salinisation. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to extend the network towards the east coast.

This is the second phase of the wider project to connect Manacor, which also foresees future extensions to cover other municipalities in the area. The aim is to create a stronger, more efficient water management model on the island.
