Improvements to Streams to Tackle Flooding in Mallorca

The Government is planning hydraulic improvements in Porreres, Selva and Marratxí

What does it consist of?

The Balearic Government is launching an action plan for urban and agricultural riverbeds in a bid to mitigate flood risk. The plan involves three actions in different municipalities in Mallorca that will help to boost hydraulic capacity and the environmental integration of these spaces.

The project

Climate conditions in the western Mediterranean expose the Balearic Islands to torrential rain and flash floods. In urban and agricultural areas, such rainfall can result in damage to property or personal injury. For this reason, the Government is backing a strategy titled ‘Pacte per a la millora del domini públic hidràulic’ involving security, land-use planning and climate adaptation.

The plan consists of three actions across the island of Mallorca. In the municipality of Selva, the Caimari stream will be adapted and improved at the section crossing through the town. In Porreres, hydraulic improvement works are expected to be carried out on the Sa Coma-Sa Poruga irrigation channel between the MA-5040 and MA-5020 roads.

Finally, in Marratxí, the second phase of works on the Coa Negra stream in the area of Es Camp d’Inca will take place. These works aim to increase drainage capacity, reduce risk at critical points and promote the environmental restoration of watercourses.

Beyond preventing future flooding, the goal is to improve the ecological connectivity of these stretches and their integration into urban and rural environments.The total planned investment is over €1.5 million euros, funded through sustainable tourism tax. The plan is part of the Balearic Islands 2030 Strategy, which prioritises digitalisation, sustainable water management and the creation of green infrastructure as key tools for stronger development.
