What does it consist of?

The Balearic Government has taken action to adapt publicly owned forests to the effects of climate change. The actions have included forestry care for oak forests, pine forests and scrubland, primarily in mountainous areas in Mallorca, but also in Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera.

The project

Forest landscapes in the Balearic Islands face increasing pressure from global warming, wildfires, erosion and invasive species. To meet these challenges, the Balearic Government has put a plan in place for the restoration and active management of oak forests, pine forests and scrubland for public use.

The action has focused on estates owned by the regional government, such as Menut, Binifaldó, Son Moragues, Planícia, Mortitx and Son Real, all of which are in Mallorca, where most of the work took place (96% of total land area treated). In total, 125 hectares of woodland have undergone thinning, pruning, support for natural regrowth and the removal of sprouts.

The plan has prioritised adaptation to climate change, seeking to strengthen the ecological resilience of these habitats. The work has followed technical standards of the Balearic Islands Forestry Plan, approved in 2015, focusing on preventing soil loss, halting further erosion and mitigating the risk of wildfires in increasingly vulnerable ecosystems.

The investment, which was fully executed in 2018 and 2019, amounted to €620.125, funded by sustainable tourism tax. The action has led to a direct improvement in the state of conservation of major public forests on the archipelago.
